I went out in my van today and broke down. It was 12.30.
I was due on the tee at 1.30 for a mixed comp. event with a buffet and prizes afterwards.
I had two choices. Leave my van till Ping G15 Hybrid for sale after the game, not preferred due to wanting to be around after the game, and also not wanting it to be dark when I have to sort recovery out. Or sort it there and then and miss the tee.
It was 12.35 when I made the call to my breakdown provider. After a 10 minute call, I was told I'd be contacted, within 15 minutes, by the recovery firm. Time was now ticking.
At 12.50, the door to the house that I'd broken down outside opened. I was approached by a bloke, who I didn't know from Adam. He asked me if there was a problem. He must have seen me with my bonnet open when I first realised something was wrong.
It turns out he was a mechanic and offered to take a look under the bonnet. I politely explained that breakdown help was on its way. He asked again saying just a quick peek, so I agreed he could look. Whilst he was looking, I was contacted to say that the arrival time for the recovery would be approximately 1.30. There went my tee time, or so I thought.
The bloke spotted what the problem was. A bolt had sheered and the alternator had worked its way loose and the fan belt had become detached. This would explain why my temperature gauge needle had moved very close to the red and the assisted brakes had failed. I hadn't noticed this when I looked (I'm a spark not a mechanic)!
Without me asking, he went back into his house and emerged with his tool Callaway Big Bertha Diablo Irons box and a tub. Inside the tub were bolts. Out came his tools and a suitable bolt. Within 20 minutes, he'd replaced the missing bolt, secured the alternator and reconnected the fan belt. He had my van running again.
I called the breakdown and cancelled the recovery firm.
I took some money out and offered it the friendly stranger. He point blankly turned me down on several occasions, even with me insisting that he takes it.
I shook his hand and he just said to Taylormade Burner SuperFast Driver me about good karma, what goes around comes around.
How lucky was I that the location I breakdown at is on the doorstep (and I don't mean that just literally as I really was on his doorstep) of a good Samaritan mechanic.
It's nice to know PING G20 Hybrid that there are still some real decent people in this world who'll happily help others when the situation arises.
I made the tee box for 1.25pm with my van safe and mechanically sound parked in the car park.
I played great too! |
