Several big name golfers had their pre-Open Discount Golf practice rounds thrown into chaos when gales blowing across the Old Course hit 50 miles-per-hour.
In a rather comical incident, Scott Verplank’s putt TaylorMade R9 Irons at the fourth ran ten feet past the cup, only for the ball to be caught by the wind and ending up some 20 feet behind him.
Meanwhile, fellow American Tiger Woods hit a tee shot at the 11th which ended up on the seventh green.
“Nobody can play at St Andrews like this,” moaned the Callaway Diablo Edge Irons world number one as he reached the 18th tee.
Playing with Luke Donald and dear friend Ping K15 Irons Tom Watson, Nicklaus teed off at the 18th before receiving a ten-minute standing ovation. The 18-time Major winner failed to make the cut, but it didn’t matter.
