I have managed to get hold of a spare 910D3 clubhead and an hosel insert with a ferrule included.
Initially, all I was doing discount Ping G15 Driver it for was to satisfy my curiosity and see if I could get a better flight than I was getting with the D2 driver I already have by just changing the heads over and keeping the shaft and the same settings. I haven't gotten round to that yet as I am currently injured unfortunately, but I'll no doubt report on that when the time comes.
It cost me a bit of money, (particularly the insert) but I wanted to find out more how the system works.
According to the chart that comes with the driver torque tool, different TaylorMade R9 Driver settings can cause the club to have draw or fade bias and the loft can also be adjusted. When these adjustments are made the lie of the club also changes to a certain extent.
Looking at the insert and the clubhead, it is not immediately obvious how this happens. The clubhead hosel has 4 pitches of castellations. So does the insert. The adjustment ring which is captive to the insert has 4 pitches of castellations at either end to match those of the insert at the ferrule end and the castellations machined into the clubhead hosel.
I can't quite see it yet but I can only think that by adjusting the clubhead so that it either "toes in" (for a draw), or "toes out" (for a fade), the loft of the club is either delofted or loft is added accordingly. I think the lie angle is dictated by whether the toe of the clubhead is down, (flatter lie), or up, (steeper lie) but with a driver or fairway wood that TaylorMade R9 would be negligble anyway.
What I can't see at the moment is how the loft of the clubhead face can be adjusted independantly of whether the face is toed in or toed out for draw or fade.
It's up for discussion. Is there anyone out there cheap Ping K15 Driver with an engineering background who can understand the mechanics of this design?
Or are we having the wool pulled over our eyes again with proverbial b*llsh*t!
